Starting a landscaping project is exciting, but it can also come with a lot of questions. How long will it take? What does the process look like? When does the work actually start?
At Hardland Landscape, we believe the process should feel clear from the beginning. Here’s a straightforward look at what to expect when you book a landscaping project with us, from your first inquiry to the final walkthrough.

Step 1: Initial Inquiry & Consultation
Every project starts with a conversation.
Most clients begin by filling out our quote form on the website, which helps us gather key details about your space and what you’re looking to accomplish. This allows us to review your project more efficiently and come prepared with the right next steps.
That said, some clients prefer to call or reach out in other ways, and that works too. No matter how you contact us, we’ll walk through your goals, budget, and timeline to get a clear understanding of your project. From there, we’ll determine the next step.
Step 2: Project Assessment
This is where we get a full understanding of your space.
Depending on the project, this may involve reviewing the details you’ve provided through the quote form, looking at lot maps or photos, or scheduling a site visit when needed. The goal is to properly assess the space before moving forward.
We take into account things like grading, drainage, access, and existing structures. These details matter more than most people expect, especially in Northern Ontario, where freeze-thaw cycles and soil conditions can impact long-term durability.
From there, we’ll continue refining the scope and direction of the project to make sure everything is set up properly from the start.
Step 3: Custom Quote
After the project assessment, we put together a detailed quote based on your specific space and goals. You’ll receive a clear breakdown of the scope, materials, and work involved so you know exactly what’s included.
For larger or more complex projects, we may recommend a 3D design to help you visualize the finished space before moving forward. This can be especially helpful for full yard transformations or layouts with multiple elements.
If adjustments are needed, we can refine the scope or design to make sure everything aligns before booking.
Step 4: Booking & Scheduling
Once you’re ready to move ahead, we’ll confirm the project and get it scheduled.
Landscaping is seasonal, and timelines can shift depending on weather and demand. Spring and summer tend to book quickly, so earlier planning gives you more flexibility.
At this stage, you’ll have a general idea of when your project is expected to start.
Step 5: Pre-Installation Preparation
Before any equipment shows up, there’s work happening behind the scenes.
Materials are ordered, logistics are coordinated, and any required permits are handled. While this part isn’t always visible, it’s an important step in keeping the project running smoothly once installation begins.
Step 6: Construction & Install Phase
This is where your project starts to take shape. Most landscaping projects follow a similar structure:
Site Preparation
We begin with excavation, grading, and base preparation. This step is critical for long-term performance, especially for features like driveways, patios, and retaining walls.
Build Phase
Next comes the main construction. This could include installing lockstone, building retaining walls, adding fences, or creating outdoor living spaces.
Finishing Touches
Once the main work is complete, we move into final grading, topsoil, sod, and planting. The site is cleaned up and brought together as a finished space.
During this phase, there will be equipment on site and active work happening, but each step is focused on building a solid, long-lasting result.
Step 7: Final Walkthrough & Completion
At the end of the project, we walk through everything with you.
We review the work, make sure all details are complete, and answer any questions. You’ll also get guidance on how to maintain your new space so it continues to look and perform the way it should.
How Long Does a Landscaping Project Take?
Timelines vary depending on the size and complexity of the project.
Smaller projects can take a few days
Mid-sized projects often take one to two weeks
Full yard transformations may take several weeks
Weather, material availability, and project scope all play a role. We’ll always provide a realistic timeline upfront and keep you informed along the way.
What Impacts the Cost of a Landscaping Project?
Every project is different, but a few key factors influence cost:
Size of the space
Material selection (for example, natural stone vs. concrete products)
Site conditions like grading and access
Overall design complexity
Our goal is to provide a clear, detailed quote so you understand exactly what you’re investing in.
Why Planning Ahead Makes a Difference
The earlier you start the process, the more options you’ll have.
Planning ahead allows for better scheduling, more time to refine the design, and less pressure during peak season. It also helps ensure materials and timelines align with your goals.
