Concrete vs. Paving Stone: Which Driveway Really Goes the Distance?

Your driveway isn’t just where you park, it’s one of the hardest working surfaces on your property. It handles the weight of your vehicles, braves the freeze-thaw cycles of Northern Ontario winters, and endures year round exposure to the elements. So, when it comes time to choose a material for your driveway, you want to be sure it’s built to last.

While concrete driveways are a popular choice, they may not be the most durable option in the long run. Paving stone driveways, especially when installed using a hybrid base system, offer significant advantages in terms of strength, longevity, and maintenance. Let's take a closer look at why paving stones go the distance.

What’s Beneath the Surface: How Driveways Are Built

A driveway is only as strong as its foundation and with paving stones, that foundation is built to perform. A well installed paver driveway starts with a dense granular base, topped with High Performance Bedding (HPB). These components provide a stable, well draining surface that can handle everything from everyday traffic to shifting soil conditions.

To further reinforce the base, a geogrid layer is added. This helps disperse the weight of vehicles across a wider area and reduces movement over time. It also provides crucial resistance to frost heave, a common problem in colder climates.

Finally, instead of basic masonry sand, polymeric sand is used to fill the joints between pavers. This hardens when set, adding strength to the entire system and keeping weeds and insects at bay. It’s an integrated system designed to handle the real world, not just look good on installation day.

Concrete Cracks Under Pressure

Concrete may seem like the simpler option, it’s quick to pour and cures into a clean, uniform slab. But over time, concrete is prone to cracking, especially in regions with extreme temperature shifts.

When frost gets under a concrete slab, it can cause heaving and splitting. Even well poured concrete can't flex with ground movement. Once cracks appear, they’re tough to repair without patchy results. In many cases, a damaged concrete driveway needs to be fully replaced to restore function and appearance.

Paving stones, on the other hand, are designed to move with the ground. Their segmented structure allows for expansion, contraction, and slight shifts without compromising the surface. If a stone does get damaged? Swap it out individually. No jackhammers or full tear-outs required.

The Power of the Hybrid Base System

At Hardland, we go a step further with hybrid base systems, a modern upgrade that outperforms traditional dense graded bases in every category.

With a hybrid base system, you get:
  • Better Drainage: Water flows through the system instead of pooling or causing erosion.

  • No Wash Out: Prevents the base from being undermined by rain or runoff.

  • Weed and Insect Control: Larger, angular stones deter growth and infestation.

  • Extended Warranty: Peace of mind that your investment is protected.

  • Superior Frost Protection: Built to withstand the unique challenges of northern climates.

This system keeps your driveway stable, strong, and looking sharp, season after season.

Maintenance Made Simple

One of the biggest advantages of a paving stone driveway is ease of maintenance. While concrete can crack, crumble, or become stained over time, pavers are much more forgiving. They can be cleaned, resealed, and even lifted and reset if ground movement occurs.

Concrete repairs, by contrast, are usually expensive and highly visible. A single crack can become a larger issue, both functionally and aesthetically. With pavers, small issues stay small and are easy to fix.

Curb Appeal That Pays Off

Let’s not forget the style factor. Paving stones come in a wide range of colours, patterns, and finishes, allowing you to customize your driveway to suit your home. Want a modern, sleek look? Prefer a rustic, cobblestone vibe? Pavers give you that design freedom.

And with great curb appeal comes increased home value. A well designed paver driveway can enhance the look of your entire property and make a lasting impression on potential buyers down the line.
